Visit the San Francisco home studio of Ruth Asawa, the Japanese American artist known for her hanging looped-wire sculptures. She learned the looping technique from basket weavers in Mexico, and trained at Black Mountain College after spending part of her youth in wartime internment camps. Her delicate, lobed forms seem to float and cast layered shadows, and she also made public fountains across San Francisco and championed arts education in the city's schools. See her wire sculptures, drawings and works in progress, and hear about her process. Small group, casual conversation.

I'm a sculptor exploring the body, its representations, and the ambiguities of gender. My work draws on feminist and queer discourse to create forms that hold fragility and vulnerability alongside poetic force and active agency.
