Visit the Roxbury, Connecticut studio of Alexander Calder, the American sculptor who invented the mobile, a name suggested by his friend Marcel Duchamp. Trained as a mechanical engineer, he made abstract hanging sculptures of painted metal shapes balanced on wires that move with the air, as well as large, grounded works called stabiles. Early on, he also built Cirque Calder, a miniature wire circus he performed live for audiences in Paris. See his mobiles, tools and works in progress, and hear about his process. Small group, casual conversation.

I'm a sculptor exploring the body, its representations, and the ambiguities of gender. My work draws on feminist and queer discourse to create forms that hold fragility and vulnerability alongside poetic force and active agency.
